The police had to stop traffic movement on S N Banerjee Road near Lotus Cinema and divert it via Ganesh Chandra Avenue and Dalhousie. By 3pm, the New Market area was choc-a-bloc after reports that ATMs here were dispensing money. Things begun to turn worse after 2pm when two back-to-back processions left the traffic around Esplanade in tatters. The twin processions crippled large parts of central and south Kolkata. ![]() One-and-a-half hour later, around 1.30 pm, another religious procession by Hindu Sanghati came out of College Square and criss-crossed College Street, N C Street, Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road and S N Banerjee Road before assembling at the Dorina crossing. The longish procession passed along J L Nehru Road, S P Mukherjee Road, Deshapran Shasmal Road and NSC Bose Road around noon. ![]() According to police, a religious procession started from the Y-channel at Esplanade and moved to the Sree Guru Sangha Central Ashram at Naktala. The traffic department also maintained that several local developments - pertaining to flash protests outside banks and ATMs on APC Road and CIT Road meant the chaos continued late into the evening. What compounded the problem was a host of other issues - with the Kolkata International Film Festival drawing in thousands of movie buffs at Nandan, traffic movement from central to south Kolkata took a major hit. Kolkata: Rallies and processions took over the city even as traffic choked and gasped all through Saturday. ![]()
